Dental Crowns: When and Which Type to Choose?

Many patients are not fully aware of what a dental crown is or how it looks. This is completely normal, as many people encounter this procedure for the first time only when they need it. In our practice at Noradent, there are a number of situations in which placing a crown is the best and most durable solution for preserving a damaged tooth.

When is a dental crown necessary?

  • After dental trauma – when a large part of the tooth structure is missing
  • In case of cracks or fractures that compromise the integrity and function of the tooth
  • When the tooth is severely damaged due to deep decay, multiple fillings or following root canal treatment
  • In cases of significant tooth wear – as a result of bite problems, mechanical or chemical abrasion, etc.
  • When there is internal discoloration (for example, after trauma, certain medications or materials used during root canal treatment)

Why is a crown placed on a tooth?

A crown covers and protects all visible tooth surfaces and/or any built-up structure (composite or metal). This restores the tooth’s shape, function and strength, reduces the risk of further fractures, and ensures greater long-term stability. It also improves the overall aesthetics, bringing back a natural and healthy appearance to the smile.

Which type of crown should I choose?

Crowns can be made from several different materials, including lithium disilicate ceramics (glass-ceramic), zirconium dioxide (zirconia), zirconia layered with ceramic, or metal-ceramics.

  • All-ceramic crowns provide the highest level of aesthetics, closest to the look of a natural tooth (excellent optical properties) – fabricated using both heat-pressing and CAD/CAM technologies.
  • Zirconia crowns offer outstanding strength and durability (excellent mechanical properties).
  • Combination crowns provide a balance of esthetics and strength, though there is a minimal risk of surface ceramic chipping under heavy load.

At Noradent, we select the material individually for each patient, depending on the condition of the tooth, its contact with opposing and adjacent teeth, and the treatment goals — strength, esthetics, longevity and optimal biocompatibility with the surrounding tissues.

What are the steps in creating a dental crown at Noradent?

  • Tooth preparation (shaping and finishing) and placement of a temporary crown
  • Digital scanning of the teeth (digital impression)
  • Try-in and adjustments, if necessary
  • Final cementation of the finished crown

Prosthetic dentistry

The prosthetic treatment represents the restoration of all teeth defects.

  • Veneers – covering only the front of your tooth
  • Crowns – covering the entire tooth
  • Bridges – restoring the tooth loss.
  • Indirect restorations (inalys, onlays) – restoring parts of the clinical crown
  • Dentures (partial, complete) – restoring the missing teeth
